The following entries, submitted by area constituents, are distributed by me in this blog as a public service to increase dialog about issues of importance to Blount and Sevier County residents. I do not necessarily agree with or endorse any statement made herein. Our form of government works best, when many, differing viewpoints are heard and considered. The process is often "messy." Read, think, and offer your opinions. Most importantly, though, make up your own mind.

POST EC-1: LOCAL ECONOMY AND POVERTY.
Received: September 9, 2006. Added: September 9, 2006.

I would like to see some action to help the folks that live at or below the poverty level here in Sevier County. It just flies in the face of good judgement that a county that export millions of dollars out of the county a day, that's millions a day, has a poverty problem.

RESPONSE TO EC-1.
Received: January 25, 2007. Posted: January 25, 2007.
Michael, I was struck by your having received no response to your submission of last September. Sans serious disability, poverty is a behavioral disorder. The cure is behavioral as well, and comes in four parts:
(1) stay and graduate from high school (even one of our awful government schools),
(2)get a job and work diligently full-time,
(3) get married before having a child, and
(4) stay married.
None of this is beyond the control of the individual.

My suggestion, Michael, is to charitably help someone with a disability and worry not one minute about those others who behave poorly. Incidentally, the average poor person today in America has the same standard of living as the average person in France and the average 1970s middle-class person in America.
